Abalos, Rangu Spring Upset as Doubles Shines at Regionals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Anusha Rangu and Aira Abalos pulled off an impressive doubles upset to set the tone for a tremendous opening performance by the TCNJ women's tennis team on the first day of the ITA Northeast Regional championship at Hamilton College.

All three TCNJ doubles pairings advanced to the second round, while Abalos and Charlotte Roarty each picked up a main-draw singles victory.

Abalos and Rangu started regionals with a bang, upsetting top-seeded Alex Mednikova and Rani Jones of RPI. Knotted in a 6-6 stalemate, the Lions' duo held serve and then broke the very next game to seal a massive 8-6 victory.

They will meet Union's Kennedy Alexis and Chara Meidani in the second round on Saturday.

Third-seeded Roarty and Jenny Landells blanked SUNY Geneseo's Alexandra Galle and Kylie Seiler, 8-0, to set up a date with Drew's Mary Kalorin and Sofiya Lebedeva.

Landells and Roarty are seeking a repeat of last year, when the Lions' top tandem gained the championship match to book their spot at the ITA Cup.

Chase Eisenberg and Alexa Vasile handled Aliya Guzman and Claire Pullen of Nazareth by an 8-1 count. They'll meet Nicole Ridenour and Lorna Flores Gonzalez of RPI, who upset a 5-8 seed from Vassar in a tiebreaker, in the second round.

Roarty, a 5-8 seed in singles, breezed past William Smith's Haley Levine, 6-1, 6-2, before meeting up with NYU's Aditi Narayan in the second round. After dropping the first set, Roarty claimed a tiebreaker in the second before the two engaged in a back-and-forth marathon super breaker, each staving off match points before Narayan emerged with a 12-10 triumph.

Abalos, seeded in the 9-16 range, met Seiler in the first round of the singles championship and, after a tight first set, pulled away for a 6-4, 6-0 victory. She fell 6-4, 6-1 to Flores in the second round.

Eisenberg put up a fight against top-seeded Josephine Libby of Rochester, an All-American a year ago as a rookie, before dropping a 6-1, 6-3 decision.

Rangu, Vasile, and Morgan Grimmie also conceded their first-round matches. Rangu fell 6-1, 6-1 to 5-8 seed Ridenour; Vasile lost 6-1, 6-2 to Vassar's Erin McCusker, a 9-16 seed; and Grimmie was handed a 6-0, 6-0 defeat by No. 2 seed Dakota Fordham of NYU.

Hannah Davis, playing in the B singles draw, lost 8-5 to Hamilton's Lila Freeman.
