EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's swimming and diving team were unable to snap Kean's undefeated season, losing 150-112 to the newly-crowned NJAC Champions Saturday afternoon at the TCNJ Aquatics Center.
The Lions (2-2, 2-1 NJAC) finished with six total event victories in the meet, with the senior duo of
Shannon Hesse and
Rachel Hannah each collecting a pair of first-place finishes. The Cougars (8-0, 5-0 NJAC) officially captured their first NJAC championship since the swimming and diving program returned to Kean university.
The Lions began the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:54.56 and scoring four points.
Junior
Sarah Burton captured TCNJ's first event win of the day after she won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:18.64.
Leading the way for the Lions in the 200 freestyle,
Cameron Carrazza placed third with a time of 2:02.83.
Hannah won the 100 backstroke after clocking a 1:00.31, and
Colleen Scanlon rounded out the top-three with a third-place time of 1:03.77.
The Lions saw consecutive third-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 200 butterfly.
Katelyn Gaulin placed in third with a time of 1:12.73 to lead the Lions, before super senior
Jamie Bowne matched her placement by clocking a 2:18.84.
Hesse dominated in back-to-back sprint freestyle events, first winning the 50 free with a time of 24.41, before immediately following up with a top time of 54.74 in the 100 free. The senior combined to score a total of 18 points for the blue and gold.
Also winning her second event of the day, Hannah outpaced her heat in the 200 back after clocking a 2:13.30 to take the top spot. Scanlon also took a top-three spot, placing third with a time of 2:19.87.
Hannah also earned third place in the 50 free after sprinting to a time of 25.35.
In the 200 breast, Gaulin secured her second third-place finish with a time of 2:36.30.
The 500 free saw Burton finish second in 5:32.46, with
Lauren Wolstenholme touching the wall right after her in third. The sophomore clocked a time of 5:39.36.
Bowne finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.72. In the 200 IM, Carrazza finished third by clocking a 2:21.51.
The Lions closed out the meet strong, with the 400 Free Relay A-team edging out the Cougars with time of 3:45.40. The relay consisted of
Mackenzie Wall, Hesse, Bowne and Hannah.
Competing separately at the RPI Kumpf Invite, senior
Gabi Valladares led TCNJ on the board with a score of 249.45 in the 3-meter dive, placing fourth.
The Lions will continue the NJAC dual meet portion of their schedule next Saturday when TCNJ travels out to Montclair State. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
