Women’s swim honors senior class in loss to Rowan

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's swimming and diving team honored the senior class at home Saturday afternoon, as the Lions wrapped up the regular season with a 175-86 loss to Rowan.

Before the meet began, the Lions honored the seven athletes of the 2023 senior class during the annual senior day celebration. The seven Lions honored were: Cameron Carrazza, Faith Cortright, Rachel Hannah, Shannon Hesse, Chloe Howard, Gabi Valladares, and Jamie Bowne. Among many accomplishments, the class played a pivotal role in the 2020-21 NJAC Championship winning team.

The senior duo of Rachel Hannah and Shannon Hesse dominated in the freestyle events. Hannah won the first event of the day for TCNJ in the 200 free with a time of exactly two minutes. Hesse followed up by outsprinting the field in the 50 free, clinching a top spot of her own with a time of 24.06. In the 100 free, Hesse placed second in exactly 55 seconds and Hannah finished in third after touching the wall in 55.41 seconds.

Super senior Jamie Bowne had a standout day in both butterfly events. In the 100 fly, Bowne won with a time of 1:01.63 for the Lions third event victory of the meet. The 200 fly saw Bowne finish third with a time of 2:17.56 in an extremely close race which saw the top three times separated by just 0.13 seconds.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the Lions finished second with a time of 1:51.69, the senior quartet of Hannah, Carrazza, Bowne and Hesse were narrowly beat out by five hundredths of a second.

The 1000 free saw junior Sarah Burton finish third with time of 11:10.07. The junior would follow up by finishing second in the 100 breast in 1:13.49.

Freshman Sophia Hall finished third in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.63. Fellow freshman Katelyn Gaulin placed second in the 200 breast after clocking a 2:34.27. Sophomore Ren Wolstenholme also placed second in the 500 free with a time of 5:30.47.

The Lions closed out the day with a second place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:41.39. The relay consisted of Carrazza, Mackenzie Wall, Hesse and anchored by Hannah.

The postseason officially begins for TCNJ in three weeks when the Lions compete in the Metropolitan Conference Championships at Rutgers University. The four-day meet weekend is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Feb. 16, and concludes on Sunday, Feb. 19.
