9/23/2023 7:36:00 PM

GENEVA, N.Y. – The TCNJ women's tennis team put together a strong debut at the ITA Northeast Regional championship on Saturday, with Aira Abalos advancing to the Round of 16 in singles and Chase Eisenberg and Zoey Albert gaining the quarterfinals in doubles.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Seeded in the 9-16 range, Abalos cruised into the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Drew's Mary Kalorin. She was in cruise control against Misericordia's Brianna Pizzano in the next match, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 decision to advance to the Round of 16
  • Two of TCNJ's other three entrants, both freshmen, joined Abalos in the second round: Albert handled William Smith's Natalie Haythorn 6-3, 6-1, while Gabriella Robinson caught a break as Konika Dhull – her seeded opponent from Skidmore – retired with an injury after securing the first set, 6-2.
  • Albert and Robinson each fell in the second round; Robinson lost by a 6-4, 6-1 line to William Smith's Haley Levine, while Albert took No. 3/4 seed Erin McCusker of Vassar to the brink before conceding a 3-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6 thriller
  • In her regional debut, Prisha Priyadarshini lost 6-3, 6-2, to Vassar's Sophie Chen
  • Albert and Eisenberg made waves in doubles, upsetting the No. 3-4 seed from St. Lawrence in a tiebreaker in the first round. They went on to take care of business in the second round, rolling past a pairing from Skidmore to reach the quarterfinals
  • Abalos and Priyardarshink dropped an 8-4 decision to a team from Skidmore in the first round of the doubles championship
NOTES
  • Abalos reached the third round at regionals for the first time in her career. She bowed out in the second round each of the last two seasons
  • Abalos' second-round singles victory was the 75th win of her TCNJ career
UP NEXT
  • Abalos will take on No. 1 seed Josephine Libby of Rochester in the singles Round of 16 at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Libby reached the semifinals at last year's Northeast Regional and conceded only one game in her first two matches
  • Albert and Eisenberg will face Menendez and Goel from NYU in Sunday's quarterfinals, tentatively slated to start at 1 p.m.
