Henderson pitches TCNJ past rival Rowan, 9-2

GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey baseball team had a 9-2 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday afternoon.

The Lions improve to 15-12-1 overall and 7-3 in the conference. The Profs have a 16-9-1 record and a 5-5 NJAC mark. Right-hander Connor Henderson (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/S. Brunswick) pitched a complete game for TCNJ. Henderson (5-0) scattered eight hits and gave up two runs, while striking out four batters. For Rowan, left-hander Mark Porter (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) was the losing pitcher. Porter (1-1) tossed 5.1 innings allowing seven runs, two earned. He recorded seven strikeouts.

Shortstop Jeff Toth (sr. Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) paced the Lions with three hits (five at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a home run. Third baseman Vince Mazzaccaro (sr. Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went two for five with two runs scored and one RBI. Catcher Mike Galeotafiore (fr. Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) added two hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Adam Tussey (sr. Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) had a double and scored once. Left fielder Chris Esperon (jr. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) crossed the plate twice.

For the Profs, right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was two for four with one RBI and a double. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) and designated hitter Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) both contributed with two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) posted one RBI.

TCNJ went ahead 4-0 in the top of the second inning. Esperon reached base with a single and later came home on an error. First baseman James Ruzich (fr. Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) walked with the bases loaded, scoring designated hitter Ryan Anzelone (jr. Vernon, NJ/Vernon Twp.). Toth followed with a two RBI single. The Lions tacked on three runs in the fifth for a 7-0 advantage. Toth had a leadoff homer to left field. Galeotafiore singled through the left side, plating Mazzaccaro.

Rowan scored its only two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. McMullin doubled in Ready who reached on a single. Johanson came home on a ground out by Reindel. TCNJ added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Mazzaccaro's single drove in Toth and Anzelone singled through the left side, bringing Mazzaccaro home.
