Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey kicked off the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships in Marietta, Ohio in impressive fashion on Thursday with a one individual and one relay team advancing into the finals of their respective events.

The championships are being held at Marietta College and will run through Saturday.

Junior Al Wonesh (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) set a school record in the 400 intermediate hurdles as he posted a time of 52.66 seconds. That time placed him second in his heat as he will be one of eight runners competing in the finals on Saturday. He time bested the old mark of 52. 84 set by Dave Burns in 2002.

In the 4x400 relay, the Lions automatically moved onto the finals as they placed second in their heat with a time of 3:14.99. Running on that team for TCNJ were sophomore Jule Brooks (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City), senior Pasquale DiGioacchino (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards), senior Steve Murray (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown), and junior DeShard Stevens (Jersey City, NJ/James T. Ferris).
