Lions dominate in win over Red Hawks

Senior Katie Morgan took first in the 500-free and medley relay.

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team got off to a fast start as in its season opener as they coasted past Montclair State University 177-112 in Packer Hall.

The Lions took first place in 11 out of 14 events, making a bold statement to their competitors in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Senior Margaret Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East), junior Laura Pierce (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), and sophomore Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) displayed their All-American form from 2010 winning multiple events for the Lions (1-0, 1-0 NJAC).

Pierce took first in a pair of individual events, while also contributing to TCNJ's top placement in the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.07). She won the 100-yard freestyle event, finishing in 53.96, while also placing first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.00. Senior Katie Morgan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) won the 500-yard free posting a time of 5:33.67.

Molloy got off to a strong start winning the 200-yard butterfly in 2:12.49, while Shangle tapped the wall first in the 100-yard breast stroke, finishing in 1:07.79. Molloy also raced in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which the Lions claimed in 1:43.01.

Senior Danielle Dilts (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) placed first in the 200-yard breast stroke in 2:33.09, and freshman Ashley Conroy (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) earned her first victory as a rookie winning the 100-yard backstroke event in 1:00.53. She was also a catalyst in both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays that placed first.  

At the far at the end of the, freshman Sabrina Lucchesi (Columbus, NJ/Notre Dame) made quite an impression in her first collegiate meet as she broke the program record in the 1 meter/11 dives with a score of 454.40 She also placed first in the 1-meter/6 dives posting 187.20 and the 3-meter event posting 282.60.

TCNJ gears up for its next conference meet next Saturday, October 30 at Ramapo College. The meet is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
