Mahwah, NJ … Ramapo College won its sixth straight game to open the season as they defeated The College of New Jersey men's basketball team 78-58 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Mahwah, NJ.
The Roadrunners, the favorite to win the NJAC in the conference preseason polls, improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Lions dropped to 2-6 on the season and 1-4 in the NJAC.
Sophomore
Alex Fox (Washington, NJ/Westwood) reached double figures in scoring for the fifth consecutive game and led TCNJ with 15 points. Junior
Skyelar Ettin (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore
Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Life Center Academy) registered 13 points and five assists on the day. Sophomore
DJ Griffin (Piscataway, NJ/Bishop George) netted a season-best 10 points, draining four-of-five shots from the floor.
Ramapo shot 53 percent from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers. Senior guard
Will Sanborn, who ranks second in the conference in scoring at 16.4 points per game, led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed eight rebounds
. Garrett Thiel and
Stephon Treadwell finished with 14 points each, and
Elgin Brown chipped in with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Fox, who entered the game leading the conference in field goal percentage shooting at a success rate of 58 percent, scored seven straight points for the Lions as they held a 21-20 lead with 8:33 remaining in the first half. The two teams traded punches over the next four minutes before a jumper by Griffin made it a 30-27 TCNJ advantage. The Roadrunners, however, erupted for a 14-2 run and headed to the locker room with a 44-36 lead.
Ramapo increased its lead during the opening 10 minutes of the second period. The Lions hit three of their first five shots to open the second half, but then misfired on their next nine field goal attempts. The Roadrunners took advantage and mounted a 12-0 run. TCNJ could not recover against a veteran Ramapo squad.
The Lions were able to get to the free-throw line just twice in the game, while the Roadrunners made good on 14-of-19 attempts from the charity stripe.
The Lions return home to take on Rowan University on Wednesday, December 12. They play the back-end of the conference doubleheader beginning at 8 p.m.
