New Haven, CT ... The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team remained perfect on the season as they defeated Division II opponent Southern Connecticut State University 154-108 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (4-0) compiled a large share of their points by winning seven individual events and two relay races outright. They wasted no time in establishing a lead as junior
Hailey Growney (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills), senior
Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park), junior
Ashley Conroy (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), and sophomore
Brennah Ross (Paoli, PA/Cyber Charter School) posted a time of 1:52.04 to win the opening 200-medley relay event.
Conroy led TCNJ to a sweep of the top three spots in the 200-backstroke event. She claimed top honors with a time of 2:12.50. Runner-up finisher
Samantha Parlow (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) posted a time of 2:13.98 followed by Growney who finished in 2:14.41.
Shangle registered wins in the 50- and 100-freestyle events. She posted winning times of 24.74 and 54.11. Freshman
Sarah Richards (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) placed third in the 50-free in 26.70.
Sophomore
Nicole Muha (Dunnellen, NJ/Dunnellen) continues her strong season as she was the first to touch the wall with two hands in the 200-breaststroke. Her time of 2:31.62 topped the field of swimmers. Junior
Kelsey Sumple (Windsor, CT/Northwest Catholic) earned points with a fourth-place finish in 2:40.57 followed by sophomore
Summer Thomas (North Plainfield, NJ/Metuchen) who posted a time of 2:42.61. Sumple also placed third in the 100-breast.
Rookie
Eilish Devine (Oradell, NJ/River Dell) took top honors in a distance event for the second straight week as she won the 1000-free with a finish of 11:14.32.
Senior Jenny Zavoda (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) won the shorter distance event, defeating all competitors in the 500-free with a time of 5:23.47.
The Lions spread the icing on the cake by winning the 400-free relay. Zavoda, Conroy, Muha, and Ross punctuated the team victory with a winning time of 3:43.48.
The Lions now take an extended break in competition for the next five weeks. They return to action when they host West Chester and Johns Hopkins University in a tri-meet scheduled for Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13.
