Osprey defense stymies Lions in Galloway

 Galloway, NJ … Coming off its best offensive performance of the season, The College of New Jersey basketball team ran into a stingy defense at Richard Stockton College as they dropped a 58-38 decision on Wednesday night.
 
The loss dropped the Lions to 5-13 overall and 3-9 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. The Ospreys improved to 14-4 on the season and 9-3 in the conference. TCNJ connected on just 7-of-27 field goal attempts in the second half and shot 28 percent in the game. With Richard Stockton controlling the interior game, it was simply too much to overcome for the visiting Lions.
 
Senior William Lester (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) and sophomore Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Life Center Academy finished with nine points to lead all TCNJ scorers. Ospey guard Rameel Johnson tallied 10 points and was the lone player in double figures in the contest. He also collected a game-high eight rebounds and four assists.
 
A 9-0 run to close out the opening half gave the Ospreys a 30-23 advantage at the intermission. The Lions trailed 13-5 early on, but received a scoring surge from its bench to push ahead 20-19. Sophomore Ryan Keegan (Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) hit a jumper at the 12:14 mark before Lester drained a pair of shots from the behind the arc. Keegan hit from long distance on the ensuing possession and Lester knocked down his third 3-pointer of the period to give TCNJ a 20-19 lead.
 
Richard Stockton was tough under the boards, amassing a 19-12 advantage in rebounding. Their defense buckled down as the Lions missed their last six field goal attempts to end the half. Josh Blamon hit the lone three-pointer for the host to put the Ospeys ahead for good in the first half.
 
Buckets by junior Joe Kane (Cinnaminson, NJ/Holy Cross) and junior Alex Fox (Washington, NJ/Westwood) closed the gap to 42-32 in the second half, but another 9-0 run by Richard Stockton increased their lead to 17 points at the midway point of the second half. They continued to control the rebounding game, holding a 42-24 advantage and finished with 30 points inside the paint.
 
Lester matched a career-best with three, 3-point field goals and Keegan finished with five points and four boards.
 
The Lions return home on Saturday, January 26 to host Ramapo College in Packer Hall at 3 p.m.
