Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's basketball team suffered an 89-69 loss to Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Monday night in Packer Hall.
The Lions (3-10) fell victim to a terrific shooting performance by the Devils (5-7) as they connected on 12-of-19 shots from behind the arc to earn their fifth victory of the season.
TCNJ received a spirited offensive effort from sophomore guard
Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Life Center Academy) as he led the Lions with a season-high 22 points. Junior
Matthew Rista (Point Pleasant, NJ/St. Anthony's) was eight-for-nine from the floor with 18 points, and junior
Skyelar Ettin (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) added eight points in the loss.
Devil guards
Trevor Sykes (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's Boys) and
Mike Williamson (Piscataway, NJ/Bishop Ahr) combined for 47 points and hit 11-of-15 three-point field goals. Sykes finished with a game-high 24 points and Williamson netted 23. Junior
Will Green (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lions got off to a quality start in the opening ten minutes of the game. Rista had the hot hand early, hitting three of his first four shots from the floor. His three-point field goal with 13:03 remaining cut the Devils lead to 13-12.
The FDU, however, was deadly from long distance. They connected on five of their first six shots and seven of ten from behind the arc in the opening half. With TCNJ struggling on offense in the waning minutes of the half, Williamson drained a long three-point shot at the 2:31 mark. He followed another trey on a feed from
Derek Hall (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) as they Devils held a 39-26 advantage at the intermission.
Hall kicked out five assists on three-point shots in the game.
FDU pulled away in the second half, largely in part to five-of-nine shooting from three-point land. The Lions shot the basketball well in the second period, hitting 16-of-27 field goal attempts led by Johnson's 18 second-half points.
Freshman
Mitch Miller (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) grabbed a team-high six boards for TCNJ, while senior
William Lester (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) came off the bench to tally seven points and four assists.
The Lions return to Packer Hall this Wednesday evening at 8 p.m., taking on New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Montclair State University (4-9, 1-6 NJAC) visits campus. The Devils stay on the road and travel to Manhattan College on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. contest.
