Lions dominate Pioneers in 170-109 victory

Wayne, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team took one step closer to its sixth straight New Jersey Athletic Conference title as they defeated William Paterson University 170-109 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (4-2) won nine out of 12 individual events and swept the relay and diving competitions.

Senior Nina Sabatini (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) paced TCNJ to their fourth dual meet victory of the season, contributing to a pair of winning relays and the 100-yard freestyle event. Sabatini swam the final leg of the 200-yard medley relay as fellow seniors Hailey Growney (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills), Kelsey Sumple (Windsor, CT/Northwest Catholic), and Amy Schurer (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) combined for a winning time of 1:58.22.

She teamed up with freshman Brenna Strollo (Long Branch, NJ/Biotechnology), junior Summer Thomas (North Plainfield, NJ/Metuchen), and sophomore Lauren Rothstein (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) to win the 200-free relay in 1:44.64. Sabatini captured the 100-butterfly with a finish of 1:03.50.

Thomas excelled in the Lions first competition since early December. She cleaned up the sprint free events for TCNJ, placing first in the 50- and 100-freestyle races. Thomas registered winning times of 56.52 and 26.09 to chalk up 18 team points.

Junior Brennah Ross (Paoli, PA/PA Cyber Charter School) took top honors in the 200-free and 200-individual medley. She touched the wall first in the free 2:03.03 and 200-IM in 2:13.79. Sophomore Sarah Richards (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) also won a pair of individual events. He claimed the blue ribbon in the 100-backstroke in 1:07.06 and 500-free in 5:42.56.

Senior Sabrina Lucchesi (Columbus, NJ/Notre Dame) made a successful return to the diving board, winning both the 1- and 3-meter events. The four-time All-American posted scores of 293.62 in the 1-meter and 306.75 in the 3-meter.

The Lions return home to take on Rowan University next Saturday at TCNJ's Aquatic Center at 2 p.m. The winner of that meet will be crowned 2013-14 NJAC champion.
