Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's basketball team ran into a red-hot offense as they fell to Richard Stockton College 95-71 in Packer Hall on Wednesday night.
The Lions (7-12, 5-7 NJAC) fought hard all night, but had trouble containing an explosive and efficient Osprey offense. TCNJ is now tied for sixth place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings with Ramapo College, setting up a critical game with the Roadrunners this Saturday. The top six teams advance to the NJAC championship tournament.
Richard Stockton shot 62 percent from the floor in the win and maintained pace with Rutgers-Newark to remain tied for first place. They were even better from three-point land, connecting on 11-of-17 shots from behind the arc. The Ospreys entered the game leading the NJAC in three-point shooting.
For TCNJ, junior
Skyelar Ettin (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) enjoyed his best performance of the season scoring 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Classmate
Alex fox (Washington, NJ/Westwood) netted 11 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the floor. Freshman
Alex Cirlincione (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean) played with great energy in 27 minutes off the bench, dishing out four assists and copping two steals.
Junior
Josh Blamon (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Senior
Rich Suhr (Bridgeton, NJ/Sacred Heart) finished with 16 points and senior
Nnamdi Usuwa (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) added 12 points. Senior
Rameel Johnson (Newark, NJ/Science Park) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and chipped in with seven points.
The Lions played perhaps its best 15 minutes of the season in the opening period. They drained 12 of their first 19 shots, 10 of which came off assists. The problem was that the Ospreys were even better, landing an eye-popping 20-of-29 shots that included 7-of-10 from three-point range. The lead changed hands six times in the period, but a 14-3 run in the final four minutes by Richard Stockton allowed the visitor to mount a 51-34 advantage at the break.
Ettin came out hot from long distance, knocking down his first three shots from behind the arc. He finished the half with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Suhr was near-perfect in the period, missing just one field goal in five attempts. He pumped in four 3-pointers and dropped in both foul shots to chalk up 14 points. Blamon, who ranks second in the NJAC in scoring, was equally impressive with 11 points.
The Ospreys picked up its tempo after the break and continued to pull away from the Lions. Blamon was 5-of-6 from the floor and hit both of his three-point field goal attempts. Stockton was also tough under the glass, winning the rebound battle 34-26 in the game.
TCNJ freshman
Eric Klacik (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and
Joe Kane (Cinnaminson, NJ/Holy Cross) each tallied seven points in the loss.
TCNJ visits Ramapo College on Saturday for an NJAC match-up scheduled for 3 p.m. The Ospreys will travel to Newark to take on Rutgers-Newark at 8 p.m.
