Lions fall at Rutgers-Newark

Newark NJ … The College of New Jersey men's basketball team lost an 87-53 decision to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday night at The Golden Dome Arena in Newark.

The Scarlet Raiders (16-6, 12-3 NJAC) remain atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings with the victory and won for the 10th time in their last 11 games. The Lions fell to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in the conference. They are just a half-game out of the sixth and final playoff with four meetings remaining in league play.

Four teams in the NJAC own 6-9 records and are tied for fifth place, three of whom remain on TCNJ's schedule. The Lions fourth team is Rutgers-Camden, who lies beneath the Lions in the standings and visit Packer Hall this Monday night.

Junior Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Life Center Academy) led TCNJ with 18 points. Sophomore Bobby Brackett (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) tallied six points and eight rebounds, while junior Alex Fox (Washington, NJ/Westwood) finished with eight points.

Rutgers-Newark had four players in double figures, led by Josh Snow and Jordan McDaniel who scored 16 points. David Azoroh netted 15 points and Chris Foreman added 12 points. Azoroh and McDaniel each had seven boards.

The Red Raiders have experienced success this season with its pressure on defensive end and they held to that standard. They kept the Lions to under 30 percent shooting from the floor in the game andcurrently lead the NJAC in field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, and rebounding defense.

The Lions return to Packer Hall for two straight home games. They take on the Scarlet Raptors on Monday night at 8 p.m., which is a make-up from the postponement this past Wednesday. TCNJ then squares off against the Rowan University on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The Lions defeated both teams earlier this season.
