Lions win in waves in NJAC opener

Meet Results

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team won eight individual swimming events, a pair of relays, and both diving events en route to a 178-108 victory over Montclair State University on Friday night in the TCNJ Aquatic Center.

The win was the 33rd straight in New Jersey Athletic Conference competition since swimming and diving was reintroduced as a conference sport in 2008-09. The Lions received strong performances from senior Brenna Strollo (Long Branch, NJ/Biotechnology), junior Marta Lawler (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), and junior Debbie Meskin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional), who each won two individual events. Divers Hannah Raymond (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) and Sarah Grassi (Oaklyn, NJ/Camden Catholic) also placed one-two in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

The team of Strollo, Meskin, Lawler, and junior Ali Huber (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) sparked the night with a top finish in the 200-medly relay. They finished the race with a winning time of 1:30.07. Junior Emily Rothstein (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) then suited up for the 200-freestyle and touched the wall first in 2:03.35.

Strollo raced to a blue-ribbon finish in the 100-back in 1:02.51. She returned to the lanes in the 200-back and reached behind to touch the pad and secure her second individual victory with a time of 2:13.00. Lawler swept the breast stroke events for the second straight week. She captured the 100 in 1:11.39 and produced a winning time of 2:32.38 in the 200.

Meskin chalked up wins in both butterfly events. She raced to 2:20.68 finish in the 200 and a 1:03.11 time in the 100. Huber finished first in the 50-free in 25.26 and Rothstein placed third in 26.14.

Sophomore Gabi Denicola (Oradell, NJ/River Dell Regional) showed her mettle by placing second in the 1000-free in 11:12.10 and then getting back up on the block to race the very next event. She finished fourth in the 200-free in 2:05.22. Denicola wasn't finished as she raced 10 more laps in the 500-free, placing runner-up with a time of 5:30.37.

TCNJ capped its first victory of the 2016-17 season by winning the 400-free relay race. Junior Robin Lukens (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview), Cassidy Bergeron (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), Huber, and Rothstein rippled through the waters to post a winning time of 3:49.13.

On the boards, Raymond took first in the 1-meter with a score of 189.00 followed by Grassi with 172.28. Grassi won the 3-meter with a total of 284.85 points and Raymond was runner-up with 268.73.
