EWING, N.J. – For the eighth consecutive year, members of The College of New Jersey swimming and diving community will line the beach in Manasquan, N.J. to take part in the annual Meters For Mike fundraising event.
Â
On Saturday, September 14th at East Main Street and 1
st Ave. in Manasquan, hundreds of friends, family, and teammates of Michael Heaney '09 will join together to celebrate his life and help others. The one-mile, open-water swim rests squarely on two pillars – advocating and raising money for those living with brain trauma and to remember, Michael Heaney, who passed away in 2013 after a long struggle with his own traumatic brain injuries. He was a former captain of the Lions' swimming and diving team.
Â
The race start is set for 8:30 a.m.
Â
The largest open water swim in the state, the proceeds assist The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, providing scholarships and funds to help improve the quality of life after brain injury.
Â
Pre-registration is now open for the event. The $25 fee goes directly to various brain trauma charities and also to provide for next year's race. Participants can also register the day of the event for $30. Time for day-of registration is 7:00 a.m.
Â
The first Meters for Mike event took place in September of 2012. Earlier that spring, Michael Heaney was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. He survived miraculously, but was left in a vegetative state due to severe brain trauma. For over a year and a half Mike's family, friends and community worked towards helping him recover. He passed away in November 2013 due to brain complications from his accident.
