Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team turned to its defense to pick up its first NJAC victory, putting the clamps on Rutgers-Camden in the second half of a 66-49 road victory on Wednesday night.
Anthony DiCaro led three players in double figures with 19 points for the Lions (4-2, 1-1), who overcame some shooting struggles of their own by limiting the Scarlet Raptors to a frosty 30.4 percent from the field (7-for-23) and nine turnovers after intermission. TCNJ trailed 33-29 after the first possession of the second half, but
Jim Clemente crammed home a dunk to ignite a 14-0 run over the next six minutes and change as the visitors separated themselves for good.
TCNJ extended its winning streak over the Scarlet Raptors to 14 consecutive games.
Despite coming in winless, Rutgers-Camden (0-8, 0-2) found itself in front at the break thanks to 18 points from Jordan Carter, who finished with a game-high 23 on 8-of-13 shooting for the night. But TCNJ solved its issues in the second half, coming through on both ends to leave the Scarlet Raptors behind.
TCNJ converted 17 Rutgers-Camden turnovers into 19 points on the other end, jump-starting an offense that struggled to find a rhythm early.
After Bodine knotted the score at 33 with a bucket inside,
Trevor Covey gave the Lions the lead for good with a 3-pointer. Clemente capped his 12-point night with a jumper,
Justin Carbone splashed a 3 of his own, and DiCaro scored on an assist from Clemente to cap TCNJ's game-turning spurt and make it 43-33 with 13:33 to go. The Scarlet Raptors stopped the bleeding with a basket on the other end, but
Matthew Okorie's first collegiate points restored a 10-point spread and the margin never dropped into single digits again.
DiCaro matched Bodine for the team lead with seven rebounds and dished out five assists for TCNJ, which was just 9-for-33 (27.3 percent) from 3-point range but made up for it with suffocating defense.
Carbone had 10 of his 16 points in the second half, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and Clemente was an efficient 6-for-8 from the floor with six rebounds and three assists. Bodine finished with nine points and seven rebounds to go with a pair of blocks.
Okorie netted five points, including his first career 3-pointer, in 14 minutes off the bench.
TCNJ returns home to face Montclair State on Saturday.
