EWING, N.J. –
The TCNJ men's swimming and diving team opened the 2020-21 season with a virtual victory over William Paterson University, 158-76, on Saturday afternoon. The meet was the first of the season for both teams.

Due to the ongoing pandemic both teams swam in their home pools and the times were then combined to produce the team scoring.

"I am really proud of the energy our men created," said head coach David Dow. "We showed the ability to get up and show we are one of the top teams in the country. We are happy with the results, but know there is still a lot of room for improvement in the coming weeks.

TCNJ claimed victory in all 14 events, led by Patrick Sullivan. Sullivan swam the breaststroke for TCNJ's victorious 200-medley relay team. The sophomore then swept the 50- and 100-breast with times of 26.94 and 58.59.

"The team has been getting excited and amped the last few weeks," said Sullivan. "It was amazing to see how that excitement translated in the pool with fast times today."

Freshman James McChesney was impressive in his collegiate debut. He swam the anchor leg on the winning 200-medley relay team, claimed individual victory in the 200- and 100-free with times of 1:43.17 and 46.83, and closed out the day swimming the lead leg of the winning 200-free relay.

Senior Andrew Thompson added to his storied career with the Lions, swimming the fly leg of the winning 200-medley relay. Thompson won the 100-fly with a time of 50.58 and won the 200-IM, touching the wall at 1:55.63.

Pat Bakey won the 50-free in 21.82 and swam the anchor on the winning 200-free relay. Sean Rave swam the backstroke on the 200-medley relay team, then won the 100-back with a time of 51.41.

Conrad Hoody claimed victory in the 1,000-free with a time of 10:04.69. Matt Watts won the 50-back in 25.57. Griffin Morgan won the 500-free with a time of 4:50.51.

Freshman Jack Marble won the 50-fly with a time of 24.32 in his collegiate debut.

The Lions will swim in a virtual meet next Saturday against Ramapo at noon.
