EWING, N.J. –
The TCNJ women's swimming and diving team opened the 2020-21 season with a victory on Saturday afternoon over William Paterson University, 158-84, in a virtual meet. The meet was the first of the season for both teams.

Due to the ongoing pandemic both teams swam in their home pools and the times were then combined to produce the team scoring.

"The virtual format was different," said head coach Jennifer Harnett '93. "Our team is great at adapting to situations and the senior leadership on the team helps facilitate that."

TCNJ won all 14 events to sweep the meet.

Rachel Hannah swam the leadoff leg for the Lions' winning 200-free relay. Hannah also won a pair of individual events. She touched the wall at 29.41 in the 50-back and 55.17 in the 100-free.

"I think I speak for the team by saying that this season is definitely different," said Hannah. "We have been working incredibly hard at practice and our swimming and diving today reflected that. I am so grateful to be given this opportunity to swim this year and I cannot wait to see how much we can accomplish."

Zoe Chan had a strong showing in her defense of the NJAC Swimmer of the Year honor. Chan won the 100-fly in 58.98, the 50-fly in 27.09, and the 200-IM in 2:14.73.

Faith Cortright swept the distance events, winning the 1,000-free in 11:44.02 and 500-free in 5:36.70.

Melanie Fosko claimed victory in both of the breaststroke events. She posted times of 33.07 in the 50-breast and 1:12.14 in the 100-breast.

Jamie Bowne out-touched Cameron Carrazza to win the 200-free by .06 in a winning time of 2:04.12.

Shannon Hesse won the 50-free with a time of 24.69. Sofia Harty won the 100-back with a time of 1:04.04.

Kayla Krisak, Carrazza, Kayla Jelinek, and Megan Healy opened the day with a win in the 200-medley relay. Maya Hedstrom, Krisak, and Jelinek joined Hannah in closing out the event with victory in the 200-free relay.

"It just felt good to see everyone racing and diving again," said Harnett. "They haven't competed in almost a year and I feel we started off really strong."

The Lions will swim in a virtual meet next Saturday at noon against Ramapo.
