EWING, N.J. – TCNJ Executive Director of Athletics
Amanda V. DeMartino announced Thursday the hiring of Miles Smith, Jr., as Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Development.
"This was an extremely competitive search," DeMartino said. "With that being said, the committee was really impressed with Miles' experience in compliance and also directly working with student-athletes."
Smith will be responsible for managing the department's compliance and eligibility processes and ensuring the department's adherence to all NCAA, NJAC and TCNJ rules and regulations, including administering annual compliance presentations, and rules education programming.
"I am truly blessed and honored to be joining The College of New Jersey athletic department in this significant role as Associate Athletic Director of Compliance and Student Development," Smith said. "I would like to thank Executive Director of Athletics
Amanda V. DeMartino and the entire search committee for this amazing opportunity."
He will also work to develop educational, leadership and support programming for student-athletes, and to research, identify and solicit student-athletes for participation in leadership, career, internship and education programming offered by the NCAA and other organizations. He will also serve as the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and other development programs, such as Lions Leading Lions. Smith will also be the department's Diversity & Inclusion Designee.
"I look forward to building transformative relationships with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, and administrators," Smith said. "I am excited to bring energy and passion to build on The College of New Jersey rich tradition of providing student-athletes with an experience that leads to lifelong success."
Smith comes to TCNJ from Northern Vermont University-Johnson, where he served as assistant director of athletics and as the head men's basketball coach. As assistant AD, Smith managed all aspects of compliance for the institution, the conference and the NCAA, including analyzing and interpreting NCAA rules on recruiting, eligibility, financial aid, and many other regulations.
He held several other roles at NVU-Johnson, including as the Diversity & Inclusion Designee and the head men's basketball coach. As the Diversity & Inclusion Designee, Smith was a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force and the Racial Equity Alliance of Lamoille. He also implemented diversity and inclusion initiatives for the athletics department and developed programming for BIPOC student-athletes.
"It was evident that he cares deeply about the student-athlete experience, which is the top priority for us," DeMartino said. "I am excited for him to join us and I know that he will be a great addition to our team."
As the men's basketball coach, Smith was named North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 2015, and he's served as the conference's men's basketball committee chair and on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee.
His basketball coaching career crossed paths with TCNJ, as well. Prior to his time at Northern Vermont-Johnson and a two-year stint as head coach at Wilson College, Smith was an assistant men's basketball coach with the Lions in 2012-13. He was also an assistant coach at Mercer County Community College for three years.
Smith will begin his duties at TCNJ on May 24.
