Men's Hoops Succumbs to Profs' Second-Half Surge

1/19/2022 9:49:00 PM

Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team matched Rowan shot for shot in a first half full of offensive fireworks, but the visiting Lions were unable to keep pace after intermission in a 101-79 NJAC setback on Wednesday night.

Danny Bodine posted career highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Lions, who trailed just 45-44 after a thrilling first period but were undone by 30 turnovers as the Profs gradually took control. Anthony DiCaro, meanwhile, scored 11 points and racked up career highs in rebounds (11) and assists (10) to become the first TCNJ player with a triple-double since Eric Murdock, Jr., who accomplished the feat in 2016 with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists against Ramapo.

Jason Larranaga (16 points) and Jacob Hopping (12) joined Bodine and DiCaro in double figures.

Bodine staked the Lions (6-7, 3-7) to a quick start, scoring nine points in the first six minutes and change and pushing an early lead out to 20-14 after a three-point play on an assist from Hopping. Rowan (14-3, 7-3) responded with 13 consecutive points, but TCNJ was undaunted and roared right back with an 11-4 spurt of its own to pull even at 35-apiece on a triple by Larranaga at the 6:05 mark of the first half.

DiCaro gave the Lions a short-lived lead on a 3-pointer with 1:37 left in the first frame before Rowan hit a triple to go ahead for good at 45-44 in the final minute of the period.

The Profs scored the first seven points of the second half and, although the Lions got as close as five on several occasions, the last at 62-57 on a 3 by Bodine with 13:38 remaining, the hosts continued to expand the margin eventually cruised to victory.

Rowan entered the night fourth in Division III in turnovers forced at 23.2 per game, and TCNJ struggled with the Profs' relentless pressure. Despite shooting the same percentage from the field, making 11 3-pointers, and holding a 50-49 edge on the glass, the Lions turned the ball over 30 times to only 11 for Rowan. That discrepancy allowed the Profs to attempt 91 field goals against only 64 for the Lions, and the sheer volume was too much for TCNJ to overcome.

Larranaga finished 6-for-12 from the field and made four 3-pointers on the way to 16 points, a season high. He was one of three Lions, alongside Hopping and Jim Clemente, to collect five rebounds.

Andrew Seager and Marcellus Ross paced six Profs in double figures with 20 points apiece.

TCNJ stays on the road to take on Montclair State on Saturday.
