SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The TCNJ men's swimming and diving team dominated in the pool to beat No. 22 Swarthmore 180-82 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (3-0) won a staggering 13 of the 14 events competed in, highlighted by sophomore Ryan Higgins who broke the Swarthmore Pool records in the 200 backstroke after swimming a 1:52.37. Also noteworthy were the 200 Medley Relay team of Andrew Kidchob, Ryan VanDeVeen, Richard Park and Dixon Kahler. The quartet also broke the pool relay record after swimming a relay time of 1:33.17.
In addition to his record breaking performance, Higgins also came out on top in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.62. The sophomore narrowly beat out Swarthmore's Dylan Ling by just under a second. Higgins also won the 200 IM after clocking a 1:56.97.
Freshman Gavin Formon dominated the distance freestyle events, winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:51.60, and followed up with a 500 freestyle win after swimming a 4:45.87. Fellow freshman Andrew Kidchob continued the strong start to his Lions career after winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.88.
Also claiming three event victories was junior James McChesney, who dominated the sprint freestyles with first place times of 46.35 and 1:43.16 in the 100 and 200 freestyles, respectively. The reigning All-American also won the 100 butterfly, beating out Garnett swimmer Cami Wilson by 0.22 seconds with a time of 50.48.
Sophomore Ryan VanDeVeen won both events in the breaststroke, taking the 100 breast with a time of 58.27 and swimming a 2:09.10 to win the 200 breast.
The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Brian Bull, Dixon Kahler, Matt Watts and James McChesney closed out the meet with a winning time of 3:07.17, beating out Swarthmore's A-team which swam a time of 3:07.95.
The Lions will look to stay perfect on the season next week when they travel out to New York City for a tri-meet battle with No. 9 NYU and No. 5 Johns Hopkins. The scheduled start time is at 1 p.m.
