PISCATAWAY, N.J. – For the TCNJ men's swimming and diving team, 'Moving Day' might as well have been 'Closing Day.'
Ryan Higgins,
Shawn Kushner, and
James McChesney all produced gold-medal swims in their individual events and their teammates compiled a host of other medal-winning performances to put TCNJ well in front of the field at the Metropolitan Conference championships. At the end of Day 3, the Lions had amassed 1145.5 points and put nearly 200 points of separation between themselves and second-place Rowan with just six events remaining on Sunday.
Higgins claimed gold in the 400 IM with a 3:59.36, touching the wall about three-quarters of a second ahead of Rowan's Joe Rucci in a tight race. His TCNJ teammate,
Conrad Hoody, earned bronze with a personal-best 4:01.67, and
Jonah Herring was sixth at 4:07.36.
McChesney knocked four seconds off his prelim time – and more than two seconds off his PR – to win the 200 free in a dominating 1:38.63, which ranks 10
th in the country and fourth on TCNJ's all-time performance list.
Lukas Blach's personal-best 1:40.81 earned him the bronze, while
Matt Watts secured a huge PR (1:42.91) to place fifth.
Kushner followed with a scintillating swim in the 100 breast, posting a 2-second PR of 55.66 to edge out Montclair State's Spenser Dubois by .06 seconds and win gold with an NCAA B-cut mark.
Patrick Sullivan took third with a career-best 56.19 and
Ryan VanDeVeen placed seventh with a personal-best 57.42.
Andrew Thompson was runner-up to Rowan star Kevin Gilooly in the 100 fly, finishing in 49.01 seconds to earn an NCAA B-cut.
Andrew Walter finished fifth in a career-best 49.95, a PR by more than a full second, and
Jack Marble was eighth (52.24).
Sean Rave claimed bronze with a 50.42 in the 100 back, where
Jonah Herring (51.66) and
Ryan Heerema (51.94) were right behind in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Ethan Weiss won silver in the 3-meter dive, posting a score of 439.53 to trail only Merchant Marine's Brendan Griffiths (451.50).
Michael Wu placed sixth (353.16) and Alex Watts was seventh (335.46).
Dixon Kahler,
Matt Watts, Blach, and Marble placed third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.26.
The night ended in exhilarating fashion as Walter, Kushner, Thompson, and McChesney finished the 400 medley relay in 3:18.49, losing out on gold by a paltry .02 seconds to Rowan. The time was still plenty low enough for an NCAA B-cut and puts the Lions 11
th in the nation.
METs continues Sunday morning with prelims in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly. The finals session includes those events as well as the 1650 free, the 1-meter dive, and the 400 free relay.
