Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey's men's and women's swimming and diving
teams hosted Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon in TCNJ's Aquatic
Center. The Lions swept the Ducks to improve to 2-0 on the young season, while both
Stevens squads drop to 1-1. TCNJ's women's team won 172.5-89.5, while the men
won 153-106.
Leading the way for the men on the day was sophomore Tom Medvecky
(Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) as he was a triple winner. He won 200 butterfly in
1:56.62, the 100 freestyle in 47.99 and the 100 butterfly in 52.34.
Junior Myles O'Connor (Santa Monica, CA) captured a pair of firsts as he won the
100 breaststroke in 59.12 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.85. Senior Ted Yoa
(Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) added a second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.49
and a third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.41.
Freshman Ryan Clarke (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) won the 50 freestyle in 21.88
and took third in the 200 individual medley (2:01.88). Sophomore Joe Tseng (East
Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) took second in the 200 IM in 2:01.00, while rookie Mike
Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.95 and
second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:12.03.
Sophomore Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) won the 200 freestyle
for the Lions in 1:47.97, while senior Tom Nawrot (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick)
won the 100 backstroke event with his time of 53.76, just ahead of second place
finisher, senior Mike Heaney (Voorhees, NJ/Bishop Eustace) who posted a time of
55.37. Heaney won the 200 backstroke in 1:59.30 as well.
Rookie diver TJ Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) won the one meter
event with a performance of 217.58.
TCNJ also won both relays at the meet, the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle. On the
200 medley relay team which posted a time of 1:37.68 was Nawrot, O'Connor, Kircher,
and Clarke. Posting the time of 3:15.64 to win the 400 freestyle relay for the Lions was
Kircher, Medvecky, senior Mike Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East), and Vernoia.
