Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey's men's swimming and diving team wrapped competition on Sunday in the Lions' Invitational, a three-day event with Springfield College.
Leading the way for the Lions on the day was a first and second place showing in the 1650 freestyle race as sophomore
Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and rookie
Mike Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) took first and second respectively. Medvecky won the race in 16:39.84 and Vernoia added a time of 17:14.26.
The Lions dominated the 200 backstroke event as they took first through fourth place. Pacing the Lions in the race was senior
Mike Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) taking first in 1:56.71, while sophomore
Joe Tseng (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) who took second in 1:58.67. Senior
Mike Heaney (Voorhees, NJ/Bishop Eustace) took third in 2:03.48 and junior
James VanBiervliet (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took fourth in 2:04.96.
The Lions added a win as well in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.60 as Molloy, Heaney, senior
Tom Nawrot (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), and Vernoia combined.
In the 200 breaststroke race, sophomore
Robert Moran (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) took second in 2:16.55, while Heaney took third in 2:19.34 and senior
Donato Santangelo (Toms River, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) took fourth in 2:20.29.
In the 200 butterfly event, sophomore
Tim Rauch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) picked up second with a time of 1:57.60 and Vernoia added a third place finish in 2:03.91.
Kircher added a second place finish in the 100 freestyle in 47.68, while freshman
Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) added a third place finish in 48.47 and Medvecky took home third in 49.42.
Rookie diver
TJ Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) took second in one performance on the one meter board with a score of 296.93 and picked up a third on the other three-meter competition with his score of 376.38. He added a third in the other three-meter competition with a performance of 260.05.
