Buskett fans 8 as Lions down Cortland State, 7-5

Box Score

Chandler, AZ – The College of New Jersey's baseball team picked up a 7-5 win over the third ranked Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland on Wednesday. TCNJ improves to 6-0 on the year, while Cortland State drops to 3-3.

In a game that saw four lead changes, TCNJ would rally to break a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning as junior Jeff Toth (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville) tripled to left center with one out. TCNJ's senior catcher Rich Gawlak (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) came up with a big hit as he had an RBI single to drive in Toth and break the 5-5 tie and send relief pitcher senior Nick Baker (Millerton, NY/Webutuck) from the game. Sophomore Ryan Anzelone (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) added a pinch hit RBI single down the left line and put TCNJ up 7-5, a score that would hold up.

For the game, TCNJ got a strong performance from senior first baseman Bill Kropp (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) as he was 4-4 with 11 putouts. Junior Vince Mazzaccaro (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Gawlak were each 2-4, while sophomore Chris Esperon (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) was 2-4 with an RBI.

On the mound for TCNJ, senior Bob Buskett (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) collected his second win in as many outings thus far on 2008. Buskett worked eight innings for TCNJ and fanned a season-high eight batters while allowing four runs off seven hits. Sophomore Eric Gertie (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) picked up his third save of the year after he retired the side in the ninth with a pair of ground outs and a strikeout out.

Buskett surpassed the 100 career strikout plateau and now has 101 career K's as a Lion.

Cortland State's sophomore Andersen Gardner (Fairport, NY/Fairport) put Cortland on top 2-0 with his solo homerun in the top of the second, while senior Nick DeVito (Hingham, MA/Hingham) drove in two runs with his two run homerun in the top of the sixth inning to put Cortland on top 5-3.
