Montclair, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team produced a dominating performance in their opening meet of the season as they defeated Montclair State University 154-90.
Coming off of a 10-1 record last season, the Lions (1-0, 1-0 NJAC)) picked up where they left off. Junior
Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and sophomore
Mike Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) looked great in their season debuts as they placed first in multiple events. Medvecky won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.22 and also claimed the 100-yard fly with finishing in 53.24. Vernoia won both the 100-yard freestyle (49.98) and 200-yard free (1:45.99).
The Lions took control from the start and never gave the Red Hawks (0-2, 0-1 NJAC) much of a chance as they placed first in every event. Junior
Andrew Hessler (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke (220.07), junior
Rob Moran (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) won the 200-yard IM (2:09.31), and freshman
Matt Peveler (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) took the 1000-yard freestyle (10:34.72) for his first collegiate win.
Sophomore
T.J. Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) placed first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 177.07. Freshman
Billy Cavallo (Vineland, NJ/Cumberland) finished just behind Burns in his first collegiate meet posting a score of 138.60 for second place.
The men's team is back in action next Saturday, October 31 hosting their first meet of the season against Ramapo at noon.
