Meet results
Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving put forth a dominant performance in its 178-105, season-opening win over Montclair State University.
The Lions (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) didn't skip a beat from last season when they finished sixth at the 2010 NCAA Championships. They took first in 13 out of 14 swimming events against the Red Hawks (0-2, 0-1 NJAC) and also won both diving events.
Senior
Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) got things started quickly for his 2010-2011 season winning a pair of individual events as well as contributing to the victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.95). Medvecky placed first in 200-yard free 1:45.94 and the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 52.25.
Sophomore
Mike Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) picked up where he left off after a stellar rookie season winning a pair of individual events. Caputo touched the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle event by nearly 14 seconds, finishing in 10:25.65. He caught his breath and then went out to win the 500-free in 5:02.72.
In his first collegiate meet, freshman
Stephen Tarnowski (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein American) had a memorable day winning two individual events. He posted a time of 2:02.30 in the 200-yard butterfly to take first, and also showed his versatility in winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.67.
On the diving board, junior
T.J. Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) broke the 1-meter 6 dives and 11 dives event records previously held Gregg Lloyd '08 (6 dives) and
Andrew Kasney '01 (11 dives). Burns compiled a score of 340.78 in 6 dives and 553.86 in 11 dives to set a new program records. He also won the 3-meter event with a score of 316.05.
Sophomore
Evan Paulan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) also had a big day winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.62), the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.33), and raced in the 200-yard medley relay which took first posting a time of 1:39.02.
The Lions return to the waters on Saturday, October 30 when they visit Ramapo College in their New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
