Baltimore, MD … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team dropped a pair of dual meets at Johns Hopkins University this weekend falling to the host Blue Jays 225-106 and to West Chester University 179-152.
The 12th-ranked Lions (4-2, 2-0 NJAC) were competing for the first time in over a month and squared off against two formidable programs as JHU is currently ranked 6th in Division and West Chester is a Division II squad.
Senior Tom Medvecky performed well winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.41. He also contributed to a second-place finish in the 400-freestyle relay and a third in the 400-medley relay.
In the 400-free, he teamed up with Shawn Kircher, Ryan Clark, and Adam Schneider to post a finishing time of 3:13.50. In the medley, the Lions took third as senior Joe Tseng, freshman Michael Oliva, Medvecky, and senior Shawn Kircher posted a finish of 3:39.72. Medvecky also won a pair of events the previous night.
Senior Tim Rauch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) won the 1650-yard freestyle race with a time of 16:48.50. Sophomore Mike Caputo placed fourth finishing in 17:21.57.
TCNJ returns home on Saturday, January 22 when they take on New York University in TCNJ's Aquatic Center at 2 p.m.
Friday night
Senior Joe Tseng (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) and Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) posted first-place finishes to lead TCNJ. Tseng topped the field in the 100-yard backstroke finishing with a time of 54.20. Teammate Andrew Smith (Basking Ridge, NJ/Morristown-Beard) placed fourth in that event touching the wall in 55.24.
In the 500-yard freestyle race, Medvecky defeated his competitors with a finish of 4:50.23. Sophomore Mike Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) took fourth place in that same event tapping the wall in 4:51.41.
Medvecky also raced to a third-place finish in the 100-butterfly in 53.42, while senior Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) took third in the 200-free registering a time of 1:45.17. The team of Kircher, sophomore Adam Schneider (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), and freshman Stephen Gibson (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) finished second in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:26.79.
The pool of talent at JHU is deep as the host Blue Jays are currently ranked 6th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Lions are ranked 12th in that poll, while West Chester University is a Division II program.
Earlier in the day, junior TJ Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) notched a pair of second-place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Divers performed six dives in each event as Burns missed the top spot by a narrow margin in the 1-meter as he posted 320.55. Ryan Kuser of West Chester took first with a score of 320.78. Burns placed second in the 3-meter scoring 305.33.
