Lions sweep Violets en route to 177-113 win

Ewing, NJ ... The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team called on its deep pool of talent to swim past New York University 177-113 on Saturday.

The Lions (5-2) took first in all 12 individual events, claimed winning times in the 200 medley and 400-free relays, and swept the diving events to hand the Violets (3-3) their first loss in over two months.

Senior Joe Tseng (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) had a tremendous meet for TCNJ winning three individual events and contributing to the 200-medley relay first-place time of 1:35.90. Tseng was the first swimmer to finish the 100-yard backstroke (53.59), 200-back (1:57.56), and 200-individual medley (1:59.72).

Sophomore Mike Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) had a standout effort winning a pair of distance events claiming the 1000-free in 10:01.58 and 500-free in 4:52.84. Sophomore Evan Paulan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) also won a pair of events tapping the wall first in both breaststroke events taking the 100- in (1:00.97) and 200-breast in 2:14.08.

Seniors Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) also won multiple events. Medvecky was a first-place finisher in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly posting times of 51.74 and 1:54.34. Kircher was victorious in a pair of sprint freestyle events clocking 47.46 and 1:43.22. Both veterans were part of the 400-free relay winning team (3:11.66) as Medvecky also swam in the 200-medley relay team that placed first.

Junior T.J. Burns (Summit, PA/Abington Heights) placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The four-time NJAC Diver of the Week posted scores of 333.38 in the 1-meter and 349.13 in the 3-meter.

TCNJ will return to the Aquatic Center tomorrow to take on William Paterson University at 2 p.m. The Pioneers (9-1) enter tomorrow's NJAC match-up owning a streak of nine consecutive wins. They dropped their first meet of the season to conference opponent Rowan University 135-89 in late October.
