Hoboken, NJ … Competing in its final dual meet of the 2011-12 season, The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team registered their biggest victory knocking off sixth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology 154-108 in Hoboken, NJ on Sunday afternoon
Just one day removed from winning their conference championship, the seventh-ranked Lions (9-1) rallied to defeat the Ducks in convincing fashion. Depth carried TCNJ as they swept the top three spots in four separate individual events, placed first and second in a fifth, and claimed both relay races.
Junior
Adam Schneider (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) produced one of his best efforts of the season winning the 50-freestyle and 100-butterfly events. He also was a part of two relay wins as the Lions took first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:34.41 and 400-free relay in 3:09.20.
In that 50-free race, Schneider posted a winning time of 21.57. Sophomore
Stephen Gibson (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine) finished runner-up with a time of 21.64 and classmate
Philip Hawley (Easthampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) was third clocking 22.01.
In the 100-breaststroke event, junior
Evan Paulan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), sophomore
Michael Oliva (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), and sophomore
Matthew Knoth (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) took the top three spots. Paulan earned top honors produced the fastest time, finishing in 1:00.84. Oliva and Knoth followed with finishes of 1:01.27 and 1:03.27.
Senior
Ryan Clark (Ocean, NJ/St. Augustine) touched the wall first in the 100-free and backed by second and third place finishes from senior
Jesse Taylor (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley) and Gibson. Clark registered a winning time of 46.82, while Taylor (47.42) and Gibson (48.30) earned valuable points with their performances.
Taylor won the 200-free earlier in the meet with a finish of 1:44.44. Once again, the Lions seized the top three spots as
Brian Giacopelli (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Clark took second and third place.
Freshman
Adam Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's) continued his exceptional rookie season by winning both backstroke events with times of 52.87 and 1:57.15. He also contributed to the win in the 200-medley relay.
TCNJ will remain idle in competition for just under three weeks as they train for the 2012 Metropolitan Championship meet held from February 17 – 19 at Rutgers University. The Lions are seeking their fifth consecutive MET title.
