Lions chase down sixth-ranked Ducks

 Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team captured its biggest dual meet win of the season as they defeated sixth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology 151-111 on Sunday afternoon in Packer Hall.
 
The Lions (8-1) entered the meet ranked seventh in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll and received strong performances from an assortment of swimmers to hand the Ducks a road defeat.
 
Freshman James Shangle (Highlank Park, NJ/Highland Park) won two individual events, contributed to the 200-medley relay win, and earned by placing second in the 200-individual medley. Shangle won the 100-breaststroke in 57.60 and also took top honors in the 200-breast winning in 2:06.38. He took second place in the 200-IM with a time of 1:56.59 followed by junior Stephen Tarnowski (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein American) who posted 1:57.11.
 
Joining Shangle in the medley relay victory was sophomore Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's), senior Adam Schneider (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), and junior Stephen Gibson (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine). They combined to register a winning time of 1:33.57.
 
Burzynski bested the field of swimmers in the 100-backstroke. He raced to a finish of 51.87. Schneider won the sprint free in 20.91 and also finished runner-up in the 100-butterfly with a time of 52.02. He placed second behind teammate William Kasper (Forked River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), who the race in 51.52.
 
Tarnowski earned points in the three different events. He touched the wall first in the 200-freestyle event with a time of 1:42.41 and was second in the 200-back with a time of 1:56.17.
 
The trio of Philip Hawley (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) Gibson, and freshman Joseph Dunn (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) swept the top three spots in the 100-free. They posted swift times of 47.39, 47.57, and 47.84. The crew teamed with sophomore Brian Perez (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) to win the 400-free relay with a top time of 3:09.26.
 
The Lions will turn to training the next couple week before they compete at the 2013 Metropolitan Conference Championships beginning Friday, February 15 at Rutgers University.
