Montclair, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team notched its first victory of the season as they defeated Montclair State University 129-94. The season-opening win marked the 21
st consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference victory for the Lions (1-0).
Sophomore
Joseph Dunn (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) enjoyed an impressive outing in his first meet of the season, placing first in the 50-free, 100-butterfly, and 400-medley relay. Freshman
Scott Vitabile (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) took a first and second-place finish, while sophomore
James Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) picked up where he left off last year by taking the top spot in the 200-individual medley.
TCNJ set the tone early with first and second-place finishes in the opening 200-medley relay. Junior
Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's), Shangle, Dunn, and
Philip Hawley (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) won the event with a time of 1:38.67. Vitabile followed by touching the wall first in the 1000-freestyle event with a finish of 10:10.65. Classmate
Jason Ivins (Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame) placed third in 10:15.75.
Dunn, junior
Brett Pedersen (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), and senior
Michael Oliva (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) swept the top three spots in the 50-free. Dunn posted a winning time of 22.09.
Shangle raced to a 2:01.70 time in the 200-IM, while Dunn followed with his second individual win of the night in the 100-fly (53.42).
Pedersen,
Andrew Nesbitt (Somerset, NJ/St. Joseph's), and Hawley took the top three spots in the 100-free. Pederson captured the blue ribbon with a time of 48.13. Burzynski claimed the 100-backstroke event with a winning time of 56.43. Junior
Matthew VanBiervliet (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) finished runner-up in 57.88.
Sophomre
Daniel Tsinis (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) claimed by the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. He registered scores of 182.85 and 264.25.
The Lions are back on the blocks tomorrow for their home opener as they will suit up against Ramapo College in TCNJ's Aquatic Center at 2 p.m.
