TCNJ sweeps Rowan to capture NJAC championship

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team concluded the final dual meet of the 2013-14 season with a splash as they clinched the New Jersey Athletic Championship by defeating Rowan University 171- 121.

It marked the sixth consecutive NJAC title for the Lions as they finished the dual meet season with 6-2 overall record and a perfect 4-0 in the conference. Rowan suffered its first defeat and dropped to 9-1, 2-1 in the NJAC..

Prior to the events, TCNJ's swimming and diving program recognized a total of 10 outstanding senior student-athletes for their accomplishments and commitment to the Lions' program.

TCNJ swept all 12 individual events and both relay races. Sophomore, James Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) had an incredible performance winning three individual events and a relay race. Shangle took top honors in the 200-yard medley relay (1:24:55), 100-yard breaststroke (57.75), and 200-yard breaststroke (2:10:27), and men 200 yard-IM (1:58:36).

The Lions had a strong start, winning the 200-medley relay event. Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's), sophomore James Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park), sophomore Joseph Dunn (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), and senior Philip Hawley (Easthampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) placed first with a winning time of 1:34.55. Dunn also won the 100-butterfly, touching the wall at 51.88.

In the 20-free event, TCNJ locked in the top four spots with freshman Andrew Nesbitt (Somerset, NJ Saint Josephs) at number two and Stephen Tarnowski (Wildwood, NJ/Ramstein American) in first with a time of 1:41:20. Tarnowski also took top honors in the individual 200-backstroke at 1:55:54.

Senior William Kasper (Forked River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) sprinted a to first-place finish in his final meet in TCNJ's Aquatic Center. He won the 50-free event with a time of 21.27.

TCNJ has won every conference title since the NJAC re-established swimming as a conference sport in 2008-09. This win puts them at a combined 24-0 in conference meets since 2008-09.

The Lions will head to Rutgers University the weekend of February 14th for the Metropolitan Conference Championships at Rutgers University.
