Baltimore, MD … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team dropped a 160-102 decision at fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, MD.
The Lions (4-2), who are ranked eighth in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll, received an outstanding effort from sophomore
James Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park). The talented sophomore won three individual events on the day, copping the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke in addition to the 400-individual medley. Shangle posted times of 59.27 and 2:10.56 in the breast events, while touching the wall in the 400-IM in 4:14.53.
Junior
Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's) posted top honors in the 100-yard backstroke. He registered a winning time of 53.23, while sophomore teammate
Joseph Dunn (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) finished fourth in 55.62. Dunn also added a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.40. Senior
William Kasper (Forked River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) placed fourth in the event (54.36) followed by sophomore
Christopher Dunn (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) in 55.29.
Burzynski also placed second in the 200-back with a finish of 1:58.49. Senior
Stephen Tarnowski (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein American) earned two points with a fourth place finish (1:59.03) and chalked up three more points for TCNJ in the 200-fly, placing third in 2:01.78.
In the 200-freestyle event, freshman
Andrew Nesbitt (Somerset, NJ/St. Joseph's) stroked his way to a runner-up finish with a time of 1:46.72. Junior
Brett Pedersen (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and senior
Brian Perez (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) placed fourth and fifth in the race in 1:47.09 and 1:47.79 respectively.
In the 50-free, the Lions sprinted to second, third, and fourth-place finishes. Kasper, senior
Philip Hawley (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), and senior
Stephen Gibson (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) registered times of 21.82, 21.90, and 22.11
Freshman
Ryan Gajdzisz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) continues to perform well in distance events as he placed second in the 500-free in 4:44.46.
TCNJ expected to compete in a tri-meet with Division II program West Chester University, but the Golden Rams encountered bus problems, which kept them from participating in the event.
TCNJ returns to the lanes next Saturday, January 18 when they visit William Paterson University at 1 p.m.
