Darrin Doss was a 1990 All-America Honorable Mention selection, and that he year he helped lead Trenton State to the NJAC Championship and to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The Lions defeated Ithaca in the first round before falling to Hofstra.
Before that playoff game against Ithaca, Doss spoke to the Daily Journal for its game preview. He led the Lions’ defensive front with 51 tackles heading into that playoff game.
“During camp we set our expectations high,” Doss said. “Our secondary started a little slow because we had a couple younger guys coming in and they had to get the feel of the 4-4 defense.
“Now, we’re all playing together. We all have good pursuit to the ball, we talk, we encourage each other if we make a mistake.”
The Lions’ defense sure played well in that playoff victory, forcing six turnovers and making a goal-line stand in the second half.
As a defensive tackle, Doss recorded 10 sacks in 1990, good for fourth in a single season at the time. That number still ranks in a tie for 10th place in the TCNJ record books.
