Through the early 1960s, William Joseph “Billy Joe” McEvoy was a stabilizing presence for the Lions both on and off the football field. His career began in the 1961 season and in his final campaign in 1964, he served as a team captain. He has been described by his teammates as the “calming force among the group.”

McEvoy was a versatile athlete playing on both sides of the ball during his career as a receiver and a defensive back. On the offensive side of the ball, he averaged 23 yards per catch for his career and had a pair of touchdowns, including a 10-yard reception from fellow hall of famer Bobby Jones during the team’s seven-game winning streak during 1963.

That 1963 team has proved to be one of the most talented in program history, as McEvoy is the sixth player from that squad to be enshrined, as well as, being a Team of Distinction. That year, the team dropped its season-opener and then rattled off seven straight victories. At the time, those seven wins tied a school record.

Upon graduation in 1965 with a degree in health and physical education, McEvoy remained in the area and taught in the Hamilton School District for 30 years. Success from his playing days carried over onto the sidelines as the head coach of Hamilton West. McEvoy directed that program for 15 years, compiling a record of 79-54-4. That win total made him the winningest coach at Hamilton West up until last season. He also led the program to Mercer County titles in 1969 and 1972, with the latter of those teams being the only undefeated team in school history.

During his coaching career, he was instrumental in recognizing other local high school football players, organizing the Mercer County 12th Man Touchdown Club. This organization honors players throughout the season on a weekly basis.

McEvoy passed away in 1994, but his legacy still remains at the two programs he represented. Following his passing, the College’s football program established the William J. McEvoy Award, which is presented annually to the player who demonstrates leadership, dedication, and care for his teammates.

At Hamilton West, every player that straps up their helmet for the Hornets, will do so as they walk onto William “Billy Joe” McEvoy Memorial Field, that was dedicated in 2005.
