Victoria Nusse Isaacson is arguably the greatest goalie in the history of Division III women’s soccer. The 2000 National Player of the Year is still the NCAA record holder for both single season and career goals against average. She also holds the all-time record for consecutive shutout minutes, going nearly a calendar year without conceding a goal.

Nusse joined the Lions in 1998 and showed signs of what was to come, playing in 13 games and making four starts while allowing just a single goal. That team would go on to reach the NCAA Division III Championship game.

She would take over the starting job as a sophomore and guide the Lions to a perfect 18-0 regular season, allowing just two goals. Nusse and the Lions found themselves deadlocked at 1-1 in the NJAC semi-finals against Montclair State. The Lions would advance on PKs, 4-3, and Nusse turned in another shutout performance in the NJAC Championship against William Paterson. She would go on to pitch three more shutouts on the road to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. Nusse was honored as NJAC Goalie of the Year and would also earn All-America honors.

In 2000, the Lions put everything together. Nusse started every game for a second straight season and allowed just two goals during the entire season. In the NCAA Tournament, Nusse did not allow a goal during the four games the Lions won on their way to the NCAA Championship Game. The team needed each of those shutout minutes as three of the games were won in overtime. In the title game, Nusse’s shutout streak came to an end, but the Lions prevailed 2-1 over Tufts to earn the program’s third national championship. Individually, she earned her second straight All-America honor and was also named National Player of the Year.

Nusse’s 2001 season is still the benchmark for goalies today. She opened the season with 19 straight shutout victories before allowing a lone goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Her 0.055 goals against average stands nearly 20 years later as the NCAA single season record. The Lions would go on to win a third straight NJAC Title with a 2-0 win over Rowan.

Always a Lion, Nusse continued to be a part of the program as an assistant coach from 2002-05.
