The talent and personality of Matt Stypul are significant reasons why The College of New Jersey is annually one of the top 10 Division III swimming programs in the country. His contributions in practice, at NCAA competitions, outside of the pool, and following graduation have had a lasting impact on Lions’s swimmers and the program.
Stypul was a two-time captain, three-time team MVP, and 10-time All-American. Consistency was a major component to his vast success in the water as Stypul earned All-American honors in 1995, 1996, and 1997.

As a sophomore, Stypul placed sixth nationally in the 400 individual medley and fifth in the 200 breaststroke, breaking numerous school records along the way. He returned as a junior to place 3rd in the 400 IM, 4th in the 200 IM, and 9th in the breaststroke at the NCAA Championships.

During his senior campaign, Stypul was named “Most Outstanding Swimmer” at the Metropolitan Conference Championships. He was the NCAA runner-up in the 400 IM and also earned All-American honors in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke.
Stypul completed his individual career holding TCNJ records in the 400 IM (4:03.48), 200 IM (1:53.41), and 200 backstroke (1:56.76).

Part of a group that put TCNJ men’s swimming and diving on the map, Stypul contributed heavily to a 36-2 overall record during his tenure, which included three undefeated seasons. The Lions won four consecutive MET titles, including their first-ever championship in 1994. The Lions competed in the NCAA championships all four years of his career, finishing 11th, 22nd, 16th, and 16th.

According to swimming and diving head coach Brian Bishop, “Matt was by far the most dominant member of those Lions’ teams. He was a 10-time All-American whose leadership and success paved the way for the teams rise to national prominence. Without him, this team would not be what it is today.”

Stypul was an economics major at TCNJ and was a TCNJ Scholar Athlete.
Since graduating, Matt has continued to compete. He began running marathons and triathlons in 2000 and raced in two Iron Man Triathlons. Stypul is currently employed as Director of Fixed Income Electronic Trading at Deutsche Bank on Wall Street. He is also a fixture at Homecoming weekend at the annual Alumni Swim Meet.
