Peggy Engelbert Rust arrived on the Trenton State campus in 1983, and she was a force on the offensive side of the ball during her time at the College for the lacrosse team. She was also part of a pair of National Championship teams.
Â
Engelbert was on the team as a freshman but did not see game action as the Lions went 12-1 on the season.
Â
In 1985, Engelbert started all 14 games for the Lions. She scored 11 goals and added a pair of assists for the team. The Lions went through some ups and downs during the regular season but qualified for the NCAA Tournament at 8-3. In the NCAA Tournament, the Lions topped Wheaton (Mass.) 8-7 in the quarterfinal. The team then avenged two of their regular season losses, defeating Drew 8-5 and Ursinus 7-4 to capture the first ever NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship.
Â
Engelbert exploded during her junior season, scoring 50 goals and adding an assist as the Lions went 11-2-1 to reach the NCAA Tournament. The Lions easily defeated Drew 15-5 and Lynchburg 8-3 to reach the national championship game.
Â
Engelbert put everything together in 1987. The senior scored 77 goals and added 11 assists. The 88 points was a program record at the time, and her 77 goals still stand as the third best single season mark today. Engelbert and the Lions were a force during the season, dropping just two games, both to out-of- division competition. The Lions defeated Haverford 13-4 and William Smith 15-11 to reach the finals for a third straight season to set up the rubber match against Ursinus. The Lions were victorious 8-7 in overtime to earn Engelbert her second NCAA title.
Â
After that season, Engelbert was named a first-team All-American by both the IWLCA and U.S. Lacrosse.
Â
Engelbert still appears in the TCNJ record book, currently ranking 24th in career goals with 138.
