Hall of Fame
Ron Earl was a starter for the baseball and football teams as a freshman in 1954. During his college career he never missed a game and was co-captain for two years in baseball and football. His defensive and offensive skills in baseball were instrumental for the Lions to win three conference championships and he lead the team in batting average. Before his college career ended he earned nine varsity letters.Â
Upon graduation in 1958, Earl earned teaching and coaching positions at Sparta High School in NJ. He served as assistant coach there until 1978 when he was named head coach. At the helm of Sparta's football team he had an impressive record of76-27-3. During his eleven years as coach his team earned four state and conference championships and were undefeated in 1980 and 1982.Â
Earl's accomplishments earned him recognition in the community. In 1977, he was inducted into the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame, in 1980 and 1982 he was named the NJ Herald Coach of the Year, and in 1989, Earl was awarded the Sports Award by the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic
Association.Â
Earl has been involved in state and local football clinics as a lecturer. He is active in Little League sports and Sparta booster clubs. His athletic programs have produced many varsity Lions athletes as well as two players in the NFL. He also has maintained a relationship with the college through donations to the annual fund and cheering the Lions on at most homecoming football games.Â
